YouTube Content ID

YouTube Content ID is the most advanced music content management system in the world. It lets you earn money when other creators use your music in their videos – automatically, without any manual work on your part.

What is YouTube Content ID?

YouTube Content ID (CID for short) is a system developed by Google to protect and manage copyright on YouTube. It works by continuously comparing music registered in the Content ID database with every video being uploaded – and if the system finds a match, it automatically makes a claim on behalf of the rights holder.

It is a global system on an enormous scale: YouTube processes hundreds of millions of minutes of new content every day, and Content ID scans every second of it. At the same time, its accuracy is exceptionally high – the system recognises even a shortened version of a song, a slowed-down version, a change of key or footage shot on a phone in a room where a radio is playing.

How does it work in practice?

1
The recording is registered in the Content ID database. Bez Labelu delivers your recording to YouTube as a reference file. From that moment on, your audio fingerprint is in the database.
2
YouTube scans every uploaded video. Every upload is compared with the database. If a video contains your music – even just a fragment of it – the system registers the match.
3
A claim is made automatically. Depending on the settings, ads are placed on the video and the revenue goes to you, or the video is restricted in certain countries, or it is blocked entirely.
4
The ad revenue reaches you through Bez Labelu. The YouTuber whose video was claimed cannot earn money themselves from the part of the video where your music plays. Instead, the revenue goes to you.
Content ID is not a punishment for YouTubers

Most claims do not lead to the video being deleted – the video stays online, only the monetisation passes to you as the rights holder. The YouTuber loses nothing, and you earn money. Blocking is reserved for cases where the rights genuinely prohibit the use or where the rights holder explicitly requests it.

Who can have Content ID with us?

YouTube Content ID is switched off by default for all accounts. We enable it on request once you send us a declaration of honour – and only for accounts with no AI-generated music and no backing tracks from the internet. The requirement is simple: The recording must be one hundred per cent original and you must hold indisputable rights to it.

Eligible recordings

  • Your own original work – both the music and the lyrics are the result of your own creative work from the ground up.
  • Your own production, or production made to order exclusively for your recording (not a backing track from the internet).
  • Recordings whose entire audio content was created by you or by your producer exclusively for you.

Ineligible recordings

  • Beats or backing tracks bought or downloaded from the internet (BeatStars, Airbit, YouTube beat channels and the like) – with any licence, even an “exclusive” one.
  • Stock or royalty-free music libraries.
  • Music generated by artificial intelligence.
  • Cover versions or remixes of other people's songs.
  • Recordings containing samples.

If, for any recording, you answer in the Track origin guide that it is AI-generated music or that you used a backing track from the internet, YouTube Content ID (as well as Meta Fingerprinting) will no longer appear in the list of platforms for your entire account. Where a release is already in the system, the only remaining option is removal.

Why are beats from the internet not good enough?

Producers sell the same beat to hundreds or thousands of artists like you. If each of them registered their recording in Content ID, the system would face thousands of conflicting claims to the same music. YouTube would not know whom to assign the revenue to – and the result is false claims, disputes and blocked revenue for everyone who used that beat.

On top of that, the producer of the beat typically keeps the right to register it in Content ID themselves – and has most likely done so long before you. Your claim would then collide directly with theirs, and the system would flag you as someone claiming content they have no rights to. Why is AI music ineligible as well?

AI generates music based on training on existing recordings. The output may contain sound patterns similar to protected recordings – and Content ID would then trigger false claims by other rights holders. Moreover, AI music has no legally recognised author, either in the Czech Republic or elsewhere, which makes it impossible to prove ownership of the rights. Conditions for access

YouTube Content ID is switched off as standard for all accounts, and there is no request for it in Artists Bez Labelu. If your recordings meet the conditions, write to us – we will enable it once you send a declaration of honour, and only for accounts with no AI-generated music and no backing tracks from the internet (for such accounts the app hides it completely and it cannot be enabled). The recording must not contain non-exclusive or mass-licensed backing tracks, or backing tracks from the internet, under any licence. We may withdraw access to the service or exclude a recording from Content ID at any time if there is reasonable suspicion that it does not meet the conditions or could lead to erroneous or conflicting claims. Everything is governed by the Terms and Conditions.
